WordPress page vs blog category

Let’s take a look, huh?

Using wordpress page for a section

First, let’s try to create a simple page with Gutenberg – default WordPress editor.

For example, we have six blocks at the moment (events, works, or anything). Let’s organize them in 3 columns!

That’s how it look like in Gutenberg editor…

…and here it is on the frontend.

Not pretty enough, yeah? Also, as if we can have different size content, the bottom of the columns look weird.

Of course, we can eliminate all these problems, if we go a little deeper in html. But the aim is to get it kinda «out of the box», without using some special skills

Well, maybe WPBakery Page Builder (ex. Visual Composer) does better? Let’s try!

Starting again with three columns.

…and here it is on the frontend.

Much better, isn’t it?

Well, we can test some more editors, but the main idea is clear. You’ll have to become a quite experienced user if you want to redesign that page every time you get new content.

Using wordpress post category for a section

When we use WordPress in it’s traditional way, – creating posts and aggregating them on the blog and categories pages, it looks much more pretty. Let’s see…

Standart format post

Video post

Audio post

And as many different post formats, as site theme developer has declared for you.

And the whole pack can look different ways, also predesigned, take a look!

Masonry style

Chequered style

Animated list style

Pinterest style

…and any other one. Note, that these views are generated automatically, so there’s no need to redesign it every time you add content. You can choose the number of words shown in preview, you can choose column number and such things as should we show date or not, for example.

So what is the summary?

Simple WordPress pages are designed for mostly static content. Though we have a number of rich enough editors for creating them, – it’s more likely hard work to make it look impressive if it’s complex and contains lot’s of different info.

Unlike it, – blog posts are easy to create and category page does it’s job exactly as wp-theme developer coded it to. So we get pretty page for every category, designed one time, designed by professional. Also using this method, we do not have to avoid long-reads or even worry about content size. Plus to cons, – this way is much more search engine friendly, as if we have every single theme on it’s own post, having their excerpts aggregated on category pages.
